Broadway, New York

The oldest north-south main thoroughfare in Manhattan in New York City is named Broadway.

History: The origins of Broadway are ensconced in a Native American trail known as the Wickquasgeck Trail. The trail charted its path through the brush land of Manhattan. Swamps and rocks lay on the trail as it wound its way past the length of Manhattan Island. When the Dutch reached the island, they converted the trail into a main road through the island with New Amsterdam at its southern tip. It was at the end of the 18th century that this road was renamed as Broadway.

Broadway hotels are located in the best place to stay in New York, around Times square, in midtown Manhattan

The name Broadway comes from the Dutch words Breede weg. It was the place of the New Amsterdam settlement. A certain stretch of Broadway forms the acme of the American theater industry.

Great White Way: This is the name given to the stretch of Broadway that passes through the Midtown sector of Manhattan. This is specifically the Theatre District that encompasses the area between 42nd street and 53rd street in central Manhattan in New York. It is named as the Great White Way as nearly a mile of the road was illuminated by Brush arc lamps in the year 1880.

It is the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world. It is followed by West End theatre in London. Most live performances in Broadway theatres cater to the objective of money making, rather than as shows of art. Due to this factor, Musicals form the commercially viable option.

Broadway Theatre: Its shortened form Broadway is more popular and refers to the live performances presented in 39 professional theatres located in the Broadway Theatre District in and around Times Square in New York.

Art shows that serve as more cutting edge performances have been relegated to the Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theatres that lie in the lanes off Broadway. These art shows are non-profit ventures. Broadway theatre is a significant tourist attraction in New York City People from all over the world come to watch the live Musicals.

Besides New York, the popularity of Broadway theatre has spread to Chicago, Los Angeles and other major cities in the US. These cities have their own Broadway theatres. The Phantom of the Opera has been the longest running Broadway Musical show in New York. Broadway is now an institution in its own field. Tony Awards are presented annually to a Broadway show in New York.

Ticket sales on Broadway exceed one and a half billion dollars annually. Most Broadway performances are open ended runs. Word of mouth publicity spreads the word around about the popularity of a show more than billboards do. Evening performances are the norm on weekdays, with matinee performances scheduled on Wednesdays and weekends. Monday is an off day for Broadway theatre.
